Chapter 9 – Sophia

Sophia stood in the shower like a zombie for what could very well have been an hour or more. The environmentalist in her would have worried about wasting water—but she knew that Kate had set up a very clever system in her cottage by which the water was recycled directly into keeping the garden beds well-irrigated. Even if that hadn’t been the case, she needed some water time. The soft drumming of the water on her head made her feel like she could think. And besides… she was covered in sweat and all kinds of other fluids.

Her body still tingled at the very thought of him. The way he’d kissed her, the way he’d held her tight, the glow of his eyes and the power in his body… the way they’d drifted in and out of sleep all night, making love whenever they woke, the furious passion of their first union giving way to a sweet, easy, effortless desire that rose and fell like the swell of a calm sea… she was overwhelmed. Shaken to her core, if she was honest. But at the same time, she had to be honest with herself about how unbelievably good she felt. Hormones, she told herself crossly, hormones and neurotransmitters. Sex made you happy, that was—that was basic chemistry.

Not like this, though, came the quiet rejoinder from the back of her mind. Never like this. While Rob had been away and after he’d come back, she’d had her fair share of one-night stands with humans—it was validating, to see their desire for her, to feel like she had power over them when they invited her breathlessly back to their homes. But none of them had made her feel even a fraction of what Rob had made her feel. And neither had Jamie, when she’d finally taken up with him. He’d been different from the humans, at least… and that difference had been what had made her decide he must be her soulmate.

Well, she’d been wrong about that, hadn’t she? God, what hadn’t she been wrong about?

Finally clean, she took herself back to bed… but she was far too restless to sleep. She’d been feeling a strangeness in her midsection over the last week, something she was half convinced she was imagining, a kind of pressure, a new awareness of the life growing there. Rob had been very diplomatic when she’d asked him if it was possible that she was already feeling the baby kicking, but she’d gotten the distinct impression—despite the care he’d taken to say that pregnancy was very different for everyone—that he thought she was imagining it. But so what if she was imagining it? She put a protective hand on her belly. She’d imagine it as much as she liked.

She was hungry, though. She’d always used to get ravenous after sex, back when she and Rob were spending all their nights together… she grimaced a little as she padded into the kitchen, annoyed by how her mind kept straying back to him again and again.
